Q: How do you find music for your programs?
I still listen to the radio a bunch; KCRW, BBC Radio 1 & WFMU. One of my favorite shows on WFMU is called The Duane Train by my good friend and Other Music alum, Duane Harriott. I always make sure to check out Other Music’s update, they have great taste. It’s such an eclectic selection with just the right amount of weird. Soundcloud is great too, lots of good DJ mixes. Of course, I still check out iTunes once a week. Finally, you can always count on certain labels to put out good music. Some of my favorites: Stones Throw, Jagjaguwar, Now&Again, Modular, Numero Group, Beggars, BBE, SoulJazz, and Innovative Leisure to name a few.

Q: What’s your all-time favorite track that you think works in just about every retail program?
I don’t think I could narrow it down to one track, but I do love a good cover. Even better than a a good cover is finding an original song that was made popular by a cover. One that I’ve always loved is Piece of My Heart by Erma Franklin, Aretha’s unsung older sister.

Q: When you’re not programming music for stores, what are your interests and hobbies?
I caught the running bug last year, that’s been fun. I also have two kids, so they keep me pretty busy.

Q: What Shoplifter release are you currently loving?
Lower Dens, Django Django, and Alabama Shakes, among others.
